BOGQUEEN

These people are killing themselves and nobody bats an eye. When I try to help, nobody bats an eye. The only way to do something is to make a huge fucking stink! Is that so wrong? It seems wrong.

BOGQUEEN is the runner-up of the ATF 2026 New Play Award

SYNOPSIS

Moddi is a big fat gay, she’s known that for years now. But being a big fat gay in Cunnamulla is hard, moving to Cunnamulla after growing up in Frankston is even harder. As Cunnamulla enters its third year of drought, the community begins to burn its outsiders, finding safety in their tradition, in the community they’ve all grown to love. But at least Moddi has Abi, traditional Abi, quiet and well mannered Abi. But Moddi isn’t too keen to stick to the quiet, Moddi wants to change Cunnamulla for good. She wants to be Cunnamulla’s first drag king BOGQUEEN, and she wants to put Cunnamulla on the gay map. Faced by a community that has always opposed the outsider, Moddi and Abi must force themselves to step out of comfort in order to create safety, rallying a community of losers to shake up Cunnamulla once and for all, saving the community from a lack of tourist funding. At an old town pub, full of your rural cowboys, Moddi and Abi create Cunnamulla’s first ever drag fest, a safe space for people like them who have always felt trapped in the normal. A community outrages, a bushfire burns but nothing will stop the fire inside.

Sequins, dirt, and rock and roll, BOGQUEEN examines the struggles of queer adolescence in isolated places and the extent they must go to in order for their voices to be heard.
